More and more businesses are becoming home-based. Often these home-based business owners are hard to find through traditional business data collection methods, making them an under-marketed business population.

Fast-growing business segment

More than 51 percent of all home-based businesses were established in the past three years, with only 26 percent existing for more than 10 years. The growth of these businesses creates a need for B2B products and services that make this segment highly responsive to B2B marketing efforts.

Home-based businesses do not look that different from any other business segment. A vast majority of these home-based businesses are service industries, consistent with all businesses. Retail, construction and agriculture make up the majority of the rest of the home-based businesses. Experian has found that home-based businesses are no more risky (likely of going severely delinquent in the next 12 months) than non-homebased businesses.
